While Stardust is not explicitly labeled as a fairy tale, but instead a Romance that occurs within Faerie, it does fulfill Phyllis C. Vess’s work history shows a more concentrated trajectory of illustration work that nearly always involves a relationship with a different author’s text, and often with historic influence. The majority of these categories require cooperation between a visual and textual component, giving Gaiman much experience and possibility for experimentation and variance between textual and visual projects.

He works with film, comics and picture books, as well as the traditional novel and short story genres. Neil Gaiman’s work has a history of exploration of the possible relationships between image and text through his involvement with a variety of media and genres. In Neil Gaiman’s text and Charles Vess’s artwork, and in their combination, Stardust exhibits a particular sort of cohabitation and cooperation between word and image that ultimately places the work in relation to the tradition of the Victorian fairy tale and its illustration.
